The Gift of Song | Singing Lessons
Is there something you have always wanted to learn to do? I love to sing. I just couldn’t carry a tune so I decided to take singing lessons.
I found a voice teacher at a local university who gave private lessons. She was surprised when I told her my request.
“I want to learn how to sing one song – Fever.”
I’ve heard it all my life on the radio and in live musicals.
Peggy Lee made the song famous, and my favorite rendition is by Michael Buble.
It is one sexy song!
Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a fever that’s so hard to bear
You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night
Over several weeks, my voice coach taught me how to breathe, sing from the diaphragm, and to hold a note all while trying to sing Fever.
It didn’t work.
“Do you know the words to Amazing Grace?” she asked me. “Yes,” I said. She replied, “Good, let’s start with it and come back to Fever.”
I listened to the note on the piano and started to sing. After a few more lessons, I could tell the results were not exactly the ones she was used to.
How about Three Blind Mice?” she asked me this time. I said, “OK.” (No mention of returning to Fever.)
Another time she recommended that I sing a capella and in operatic style. Very dramatic and I did it! But it’s not a song you can sing with your girlfriends on karaoke night.
We. Laughed. A. Lot. I would see the look in her eyes of this-can’t-be-what-I’m-hearing. I would bust out laughing then she would too.
She tried everything to help find my singing voice but to no avail. That’s when I called it quits.
I thanked her for her heroic efforts and mentioned I was going to take dance lessons. (I did and broke my foot three different times, but that’s a whole another story!)
I still haven’t given up on singing. I sing in the car with the radio blaring to drown out my off-key notes. Who cares? I still love to sing!
Why wait for someone to give you the gift of lessons to learn how to sing, paint, write a book or dance? Or is there something else you’ve always wanted to try?
Do it for yourself! I promise the experience is positively worth it regardless the outcome.
Ask me to sing Three Blind Mice sometime. At your own risk.
Great article. I remember my first singing lesson, it was when i was 15 years old. Couldnt have went worst, but it was funny like yours. Sometimes we just have to put us out there and see what happens.
Have a nice day 🙂
You’re absolutely right! Life would be quite dull if we didn’t participate. Glad you enjoyed the article and it brought back sweet funny memories. The best kind! Maria…maybe it’s time to try singing again!

Singing is life….especially when you are not stressing about it and just letting it out.
No wonder most hit songs originate in the shower… Nice article
My family is all about music. Unfortunately, I do not sing or play instruments as well as the rest of my family. It’s all fun!
