When my husband and I visited Las Vegas for one of his work conferences, I spent the day entertaining myself by shopping. One of my purchases that day happened to be a bottle of cologne. My husband wore it that night and everyday for the rest of our trip.

What happened when we got back was really cool. Every time I smelled the cologne on my husband, I immediately thought of that trip to Vegas and all of the things we did.

It made me feel happy all over!

It’s no secret that research has proven that scents and smells can trigger powerful and vivid memories.

Think of how the smell of grandma’s homemade cookies takes you back to your childhood or how the smell of suntan lotion reminds you of that summer in college when you spent your days laying out by the pool.

Tell him or her you want to make this trip together unforgettable so you’d like him or her to wear the new scent during your trip so that it will always remind you of your special time together every time you smell it.

Here is a short poem I wrote that you can use to write in a card or to attach to the bottle of cologne or perfume:

Add more romance to your gift by attaching a sweet note or poem.

Your face, your smile, your scent
The memories I wish to never forget
May this [cologne/perfume] prevent
That from ever happening.

Smells detonate softly in our memory like poignant land mines hidden under the weedy mass of years. Hit a tripwire of smell and memories explode all at once.  – Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of the Senses
